Becoming a Baptist 'Rev' is not what I expected. I was formed in faith in a pentecostal tradition, was profoundly influenced by my parents' ministry among indigenous communities and marginalised peoples, studied to be an Engineer and have spent a good portion of my life flying...
The logic goes something like this:

we want young people to bring their friends along
so we won't do anything dorky which might damage their cred in front of their friends

Too often it seems this is where the Preacher comes unstuck.

Robinson notes the danger is in bringing the authority of the Scriptures in behind the application. The danger is...
Over the past 16 years I have worked with young people both in and out of Church and have noted biblical literacy and familiarity with Church cultural norms diminish among both groups. This certainly raises challenges for preaching. The back story to most texts is unknown, core beliefs are not shared, values can clash. Take preaching the Cross. Behind this...
Simon Holt is right isn't he: mission is a way of living in our world, a way of being in relationship with God and with others? There is a great concern today to not reduce evangelisation to a process or activity which might somehow cheapen the relationship. To 'evangelise' seems to bring a mercenary tone as if one were a salesperson with a product to sell, keen to close the deal.

There were things I valued in this read. Particularily Bellś exploration of his personal health in ministry. What he did when things started going pear shaped. His exploration of why he did what he did. It is always helpful to reflect and renew ministry practice & certainly I found a few take home messages here.

It puts domestic problems back into proportion and adds an element of seriousness to your drab, routine life. Perhaps this is one reason why climbing has become increasingly hard as society has become increasingly, disproportionately, coddling.

What an awesome show! I have been thinking of how often those of us in ministry define ourselves against what everyone else is doing. We are quick to judge the gaps in another's ministry. Jesus does say to Peter as he asks about 'the beloved' faith journey - "What is that to you, follow me". We should take a leaf out of this book - stop being reactive in our approach to ministry and instead get on with what God has called us to. Stop telling people what you are not and start telling...
We thought it would be good to send through a final update on how we are travelling and especially how Ashley is - as a number of people have asked.

Generally we are travelling as you might expect - still feeling sad, dealing with the mixed emotions of death and life, and getting into life. Kids, babies, jobs are things that eventually you have to get back to! And in most ways this is a good thing - it brings some sense of normality to our lives.

Letting you know that last Friday night, 29 Feb, 5:30pm at 28 weeks and 5 days, Ann started contracting and then at 8:15pm had an emergency section and delivered two beautiful little girls - Isabel Faith born 8:23pm weighing 980g and Ashley Grace born 8:28pm weighing 1050g.
